According to the Environmental Working Group, which is a non-profit group, they are stating that if celery is non-organic it may be riddled with 67 different kinds of pesticides as shown in a news report that can be attributed to CNN.
The Environmental Working Group went over upwards of one hundred thousand pesticide reports that were sourced from the United States Department of Agriculture, as well as the United States Food & Drug Administration, to determine what kinds of plants we eat, be they vegetables, or fruits, to figure out what we eat has the lowest to highest amounts of chemical residue.
Celery turned out to be one of the vegetables that had an alarming rate of pesticide infestation, all the way to the tune of 67 different pesticides, potentially. The general think on this high rate of pesticide level found in celery can be attributed to celery having a soft skin that is prone to absorption of things it comes in contact with.
Amy Rosenthal, who is the Individual Donor Fundraising & Outreach Manager of the Environmental Working Group, states “It’s critical people know what they are consuming,” and Rosenthal, also noted “The list is based on pesticide tests conducted after the produce was washed with USDA high-power pressure water system. The numbers reflect the closest thing to what consumers are buying at the store.”
So even after your fruits and vegetables are washed off, according to the findings of the Environmental Working Group, they might not be as safe for consumption as previously thought to be. If this catches on with the majority of the public, we may end up seeing a rise in sold produce listed as organic. One thing most people can agree on is that we would much more enjoy 67 different flavors of ice cream instead of 67 different flavors of pesticide.
