3.6 Magnitude Earthquake strikes Washington D.C. Metro Area


(Gaithersburg, MD)  At 5:04:47 AM, parts of the Washington D.C. metro area neighborhood woke up to a bit of shaking. USGS seismic stations recorded the activity and telemetry shows the earthquake to be a 3.6 magnitude earthquake centered at 39.167°N, 77.252°W. This is near the Roberto W. Clemente Middle School located in Germantown, MD.

According to the USGS website, more than 5390 responses were recorded by residents throughout Maryland and the DC area in regards to the shaking. The cause of the quake is currently unknown but there is anxiety throughout. Earthquakes are rare and uncommon in the area as no fault lines are nearby. The last notable earthquake in Maryland was on October 8, 2007. It was a 1.3 magnitude quake centered in Baltimore, MD.
