Texas Independence Day, March 2
Today, March 2, 2011 marks the 175th anniversary of the Texas Declaration of Independence, in which Texas officially broke away from Mexico by creating the Republic of Texas.
Texas Independence Day, an official holiday in the State of Texas, will be widely celebrated across the state by towns, schools, friends and families.
This year, as with previous Texas Independence Day celebrations, barbecue and parades will be the order of the day. Many small towns and cities across Texas will be holding parades, barbecue competitions and setting off firework displays. Thousands of backyard barbecues will be held among family and friends.
Many Texas towns will also be holding music festivals, arts and crafts shows, carnivals and chili cook-offs to celebrate Texas Independence Day.
