Dr. Oz Says Gluten Free Diet May Increase Weight Gain

Gluten-Free Diet Can Make You Fat

Today Dr. Oz spoke about the gluten-free diet fad and gluten-free foods on The Dr. Oz Show. It turns out that going on a gluten-free diet may cause one to gain weight, rather than help with weight loss as most people think.

Dr. Oz said only persons who are gluten intolerant should be on a gluten-free diet. One of the main reasons is that foods which are advertised as “gluten free” are often processed and cost twice as much as conventional foods.

Not only do gluten-free foods cost more, many also contain a lot more calories, sometimes twice as much a similar conventional foods containing whole wheat.

Dr. Oz remarked that people who are trying to lose weight by eating a gluten-free diet may not be doing themselves any favors, as they are probably taking in a lot more calories than they think. Just because a food is gluten-free does not mean it is low in carbohydrates, low in fat, or high in fiber either.

For those people requiring a gluten-free diet because of a gluten intolerance, the best choices are foods that are naturally gluten-free rather than pre-packaged processed foods.
