Dr. Oz Talks About Cancer Prevention
Yesterday Dr. Oz spoke about 5 things we commonly do that can lead to developing cancer with cancer prevention expert Gretchen Phillips, MD on the “5 Wrong Turns That Lead To Cancer” segment of The Dr. Oz Show.
The first was overdosing on supplements. Dr. Oz said this was critical because he recommends supplements on the show all the time, but you can have too much of a good thing. Vitamin E is a known antioxidant, but large amounts of Vitamin E will act as an anti-antioxidant and actually damage DNA and actually lead to cancer.
It was said that there is no need to take extra Vitamin E other than that found in a multivitamin, or better yet, get sufficient Vitamin E from your diet. Eating 2 handfuls of pistachio nuts a day will give one all the Vitamin E their body needs.
Not eating at the same time of day can also lead to cancer. The body needs a routine, and needs the fuel in the system ready for use. Without the proper fuel, the body releases stress hormones which lead to inflammation. If one is not able to eat at the same time each day, it was recommended that one carries a healthy snack like an apple or bag of popcorn with you to keep fueling the body between meals.
The third thing that can lead to cancer is not brushing and flossing regularly. Gum disease can not only to oral cancers, but Dr. Oz said a new study shows that it can lead to cancers all over the body, including breast cancer. Neem Bark Extract helps with oral health and also acts as an anti-inflammatory to help prevent gum disease. Neem Bark Extract can be diluted in water or one can add honey to make a tea from it.
Not getting enough sleep can also lead to cancer. A study has shown that people who get less than 6 hours of sleep per night are at 50% more risk of developing polyops that can turn into colon cancer. It’s very important to get at least 7 hours of sleep per night. Setting an alarm clock to not only wake you, but also to remind you to go to bed was recommended to get you on a good sleep schedule.
The fifth thing many people do that can lead to cancer was eating too many prodessed low-fat foods. The food industry is marketing processed low-fat foods to consumers, but the fat is replaced by fillers and carbohydrates. Where fats give us flavor and help keeps us satisfied, low-fat foods give a carbohydrate spike, which leads to an insulin spikes. It is believed that insulin spikes cause inflammation which leads to cancer.
Dr. Oz said that this was shocking to him. He said they were not just talking about low-fat foods clogging the arteries, but changing the hormones of the body so that you can develop cancer, while you are trying to help yourself by eating low-fat foods. His concern is that by buying and eating low-fat foods, one loses the protective good fats which help push back cancers. Low-fat diets have been linked to colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, uterine cancer and breast cancer.
Dr. Oz said that it makes him angry because as consumers we want to do the right thing, and when companies market low-fat foods to us, we think we are getting something helpful but we’re not. We’re just getting another kind of crap that is now on our tables and we’re serving it to our families.
Dr. Oz stressed that he was not talking about foods that are naturally low in fat, but processed low-fat foods. Dr. Oz even called them “fake foods.”
