Ford (F) has developed a new three cylinder, 1.0L engine that will bear their EcoBoost insignia. Ford notes how this new (and small, comparatively speaking) engine will be able to compete with most smaller mainstream four cylinder engines in the 1.6L range. Naturally to derive much performance from such a small form factor (displacement) it will feature a turbocharger which is not out of the ordinary. Additionally, it will feature Ford’s direct-injection technology, and Ti-VCT twin-camshaft variable timing.
For now, Ford is tight lipped on what series of their automobiles will be equipped with this new engine. It’s easy to figure it will not be making way into any of their GT cars, that is for sure. Nonetheless, it will likely find its way into econo-box cars for customers that want gas savings yet a bit of performance that will not make them fall asleep from complete boredom – however once again, Ford is not telling.
For anybody wanting to see this new engine, their best bet is to attend the Frankfurt Motor Show which will have a product model before it ends up in a car at your local Ford dealer.
