Trump announced on Twitter Tuesday that the Republican Pennsylvania congressman "has informed me that he is withdrawing his name".

Some Democratic lawmakers are calling on President Donald Trump to withdraw his nomination of Rep. Tom Marino (R-PA) to head the Office of National Drug Control Policy following a report that found Marino spearheaded a law that undermined the Drug Enforcement Authority's (DEA) ability to go after drug distributors.

Trump told reporters on Monday he would reverse Marino's nomination if it was "one percent negative to doing what we want to do". Among many headline-making moments at the presser, Trump said he would take another look at his Drug Czar nominee in light of the 60 Minutes/Washington Post report that came out over the weekend.

"We're going to review it", Deputy Atty.

Marino was the "chief advocate" for the legislation, the report says.

Marino's role in pushing for the law was apparently a bridge too far for Trump.

In the past, the DEA has fined drug distributors when they fail to shut down suspicious sales of millions of pills, but the new law, spearheaded by Marino, makes it almost impossible for the agency to freeze suspicious shipments, according to the report.

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., said Monday she will introduce legislation to repeal the 2016 law. "Even today's critics weren't aware of the specific implications", the official said.

But what it actually did, according to the report, was defang the DEA by curbing their power to stop drug distributors from sending millions of opioids to doctors and pharmacies suspected of supplying addicts.

Trump also said yesterday he would make written declaration of national emergency on opioids next week.

"The first and most urgent recommendation of this commission is direct and completely within your control", the commissioners, led by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, wrote.

"That is a very, very big step, and it's a very important step", he noted.

The president addressed the reports during a news conference Monday afternoon.

"This mind-set - it's extremely risky to legitimate business", Marino reportedly told Holder.
