Trump's lack of public comment for 12 days afterwards led to criticism when he finally broke his silence to claim other presidents did not call the families of fallen soldiers.

The clarification comes only a day after it was claimed that President Trump told the widow of a dead Green Beret soldier that her husband was well aware of the risks involved in the role. The White House has said there is no recording of the call, but that people were in the room with Trump when it happened.

Chris Baldridge said that, for him, it's less about the money and more about feeling like his country let him down after his son was killed by the Afghan soldier he was training.

However, a different phone call with a North Carolina man whose son died in June went quite differently, according to the Washington Post. Kelly says he had advised the president to make that point, because it's what worked for him, when he was notified of his own son's death.

"I mean, if you're going to make a gesture like that, I just feel like you need to come through with it, you know", Chris Baldridge said. "But I was like, 'Damn, no check.' Just a letter saying 'I'm sorry'". "No other president has ever done something like this [but] I'm going to do it", he said.

The Washington Post reported that during the 15-minute call, Trump and Mr Baldridge talked about the manner in which his son was killed by someone he was training.

The newspaper later reported the White House confirmed: "The cheque has been sent". She did, however, insist "t$3 he check has been sent", adding: "It's disgusting that the media is taking something that should be recognized as a generous and honest gesture, made privately by the President, and using it to advance the media's biased agenda".

Baldridge said that after the president made his $25,000 offer, he joked with Trump that he would bail him out if he got arrested for helping.
