Speaking about the procedure on the Today show, Selena thanked her best friend for saving her life.

In the clip, Selena says, "My kidneys were just done - that was it".

As fans of the singer will recall, Gomez confirmed she was suffering from Lupus years ago and in 2016, she told People magazine that the illness had begun to impact her mental health. The former couple has reportedly been spending time together over the last few weeks, with Justin even joining Selena and a group of their mutual friends at her home in Studio City, Los Angeles, on Sunday (Oct. 22).

Earlier this year Gomez, 25, revealed friend Francia Raisa had donated one of her kidneys to her in a secret operation.

In her first interview since the transplant, the 25-year-old recalled to NBC News the hard decision she faced after doctors noticed her kidneys were failing.

Gomez, who has recovered exceptionally and bounced back to work since then, revealed that she did not desire to ask anyone for an organ when she found she needed the transplant. "It was what I needed to do for my overall health".

Speaking previously in an Instagram post of the pair laying in a hospital bed next to one another, Selena wrote: "There aren't words to describe how I can possibly thank my attractive friend Francia Raisa". I am incredibly blessed.

'I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you, ' she wrote in the caption to a picture of her and Raisa lying side-by-side in hospital.
