'Teal Pumpkin Project' gives kids with food allergies options

From such a massive number, there's a high likelihood homeowners will meet trick-or-treaters with a food allergy knocking on their door. Her solution started with painting a pumpkin teal, the color representing food allergy awareness.

During this time of year, kids gather a lot of candy from different Halloween themed events.

About one in 13 children has a food allergy. This year they have collected about 300 pumpkins.

The pumpkin is a sign that residents are giving out non-food or allergen-free treats to trick-or-treaters.

Many sweets are not safe for kids with life-threatening food allergies. "We are thrilled to see so many people embracing the Teal Pumpkin Project as a way to ensure kids with food allergies can enjoy a safe, fun Halloween experience just like their friends", says Veronica LaFemina, spokeswoman for Food Allergy Research & Education.

The Knoxville Elks Lodge No. 160 chose to join the Teal Pumpkin Project at their trunk-or-treat this year. Those who know what this non-traditionally colored pumpkin means will know that it is safe for their kids with allergies to trick-or-treat at that home. This child, in particular, has a food allergy to peanuts, tree nuts, and soy.

A local family has been spending the last few years making sure every child gets to take part in Halloween.

Our work is organized around three core tenets: LIFE - support the ability of individuals with food allergies to live safe, productive lives with the respect of others through our education and advocacy initiatives; HEALTH - enhance the healthcare access of individuals with food allergies to state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment; and HOPE - encourage and fund research in both industry and academia that promises new therapies to improve the allergic condition.
