Rivals AMD and Intel are teaming up on a new chip for PC gaming laptops that'll try to take on Nvidia in the graphics arena. It'll feature second generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM2) and an Intel-exclusive, semi-custom discrete graphics chip from AMD's Radeon Technologies Group, all of which will be rolled into a single processor package.
"Together we are offering gamers and content creators the opportunity to have a thinner-and-lighter PC capable of delivering discrete performance-tier graphics experiences in AAA games and content creation applications", said Scott Herkelman, vice president and general manager of AMD Radeon Technologies Group, in a press release. AMD has already seen a resurgence in 2017, stoking competition with its chief graphics rival with new Radeon Vega graphics cards that can compete with NVIDIA at the high-end. On Monday, The Wall Street Journal reported that Intel and AMD are joining hands to take on Nvidia in the laptop chip market.
The new chip will be targeted for laptops that are created to be thin and portable, but will also be powerful enough for gamers who need that extra power for intense games.

It's a huge announcement, in part due to the long, bitter history between AMD and Intel. This technology is described as a bridge that allows heterogeneous silicon to quickly pass information in extremely close proximity.
Unlike having an Intel CPU plus a dedicated GPU on a motherboard, the company says that its the new design can reduce silicon footprint by more than 50%, and it also supports real-time power sharing across the CPU, GPU and stack memory. While Intel has always been the dominant player in the PC chip market, leaving AMD in second place for decades, it hasn't been successful in the graphics chip market. "Not only does it help manage temperature, power delivery and performance state in real time, it also enables system designers to adjust the ratio of power sharing between the processor and graphics based on workloads and usages, like performance gaming", Intel explains. In an announcement earlier today, Intel and AMD have revealed they are indeed working together for a brand-new Core processor which will be equipped with Radeon graphics. The latter has become more of a formidable competitor to Intel thanks in part to its success on the graphics side of the semiconductor market.
