Florida State University pledge's death sparks investigation, suspension of fraternity

Alcohol may have been factor in death of FSU student from Pompano Beach

FSU suspends all fraternities, sororities in wake of student's death

University President John Thrasher announced an indefinite suspension Monday afternoon through a statement posted to the school's website.

Florida State University is suspending all of its fraternities and sororities indefinitely after the recent death of a fraternity pledge and the arrest of a member for selling drugs.

The university has more than 700 organizations outside the campus' Greek life.

"They must work with us and demonstrate they fully understand the serious obligation they have to exercise responsible conduct", he said.

All chapter operations of Beta Eta Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi have subsequently been suspended. Thrasher is asking for student body participation to create a new culture for Greek life on campus.

While Coffey's death remains under investigation, President Thrasher says the suspension, effective immediately, is needed to review and reflect on the loss of a young life.

Andrew Coffey, 20, of Pompano Beach, Fla., was trying to join the FSU's Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, the Tallahassee Democrat reports. They also cannot have any organized participation in homecoming activities, which are scheduled for next week.

Neighbors said a party took place there Thursday night before FSU's Parents Weekend.

Police responded to a call at 10:23 a.m. Friday and first responders were unable to revive him.

This is a developing story.
