A section of the Scottish Parliament has been evacuated after the apparent discovery of suspicious packages.

The MSPs' block at Holyrood was evacuated as a precaution with police and fire services called to investigate the findings.

The letter addressed to Highlands & Islands Conservative MSP Jamie Halcro-Johnston was opened in his second-floor office by one of his researchers.

Police and firefighters were called, but business elsewhere in the parliament continued as normal.

Mr Mountain told BBC Scotland that the package he received appeared to have been an invitation to the Inverness Courier newspaper's 200th anniversary celebration.

'A lot of MSPs were in committee meetings so it was mostly staff in the building'.

"It's a white powder incident, there were a couple of suspicious packages sent to a Tory (Conservative) MSP", a source at the parliament told Reuters, using the acronym for Member of the Scottish parliament.

"I would like to thank the Scottish Parliament's staff and the emergency services for their prompt and effective response".

'The police are in attendance at the scene. The Parliament's incident management team has been activated.

The Scottish parliament has confirmed that evacuation, with police dealing with the incident that occurred at 11.30 am local time.

The MSP block, where politicians have their offices, has now reopened.
