Jenkins won her race in the Eighth Ward of the Minneapolis City Council elections.
Jenkins has spent 12 years working for two different council members, most recently Elizabeth Glidden, who now holds the Eighth Ward seat and who did not seek reelection.
"Americans are growing increasingly aware of trans equality and people, and this win will surely inspire other trans people to run for office and further inclusion in their communities", group president Aisha Moodie-Mills said in a statement. Her campaign platform, the Advocate reported, included "affordable housing, raising the minimum wage, addressing youth violence as a matter of public health and supporting minority artists". She is the first transgender person elected to a major city's governing body.

Althea Garrison was elected in MA in 1992, but did not disclose that she was transgender - she was outed as being transgender after she won her race and then did not win reelection.

One political researcher estimates that there are at least 29 openly transgender politicians running races in the USA during the 2017 and 2018 elections. Lisa Middleton became the first transgender person elected to a non-judicial office in California.
