In the election, Roem beat out Republican opponent Bob Marshall, one of Virginia's socially conservative lawmakers and the man that pushed to pass a transgender "bathroom bill," which would have required people to use the restroom corresponding with the gender on their birth certificate. In January 2017, Marshall proposed legislation regulating access to bathrooms for transgender individuals similar to a controversial North Carolina law.

Also in Virginia, Kathy Tran, a refugee from Vietnam, became the first Asian-American woman elected to the House of Delegates.

Danica Roem Promises a "More Inclusive Commonwealth" She never uses the word "transgender", but images are shown with her campaigning while wearing a rainbow handkerchief scarf.

"Our great Commonwealth has had many significant electoral firsts, and it's no surprise the diverse and welcoming citizens of Prince William County have chosen to elect the first transgender candidate to any state's legislative body".

Marshall sponsored a constitutional amendment barring same-sex marriage and also introduced a bathroom bill this year created to require transgenders to use the bathroom corresponding to their biological sex rather than the sex they identify with.

'No matter what you look like, where you come from, how you worship or who you love, if you have good public policy ideas, if you're qualified for office, you have every right to bring your ideas to the table, ' she said.
