Second day of strike action at Irish Rail takes place tomorrow

A spokesperson for the Transport Department dismissed the strikes as part of the RMT's "political game", claiming "rail companies are keeping passengers moving with the large majority of services running as planned".

Tens of thousands of commuters and transport users faced morning and evening chaos on the roads on Tuesday as Irish Rail staff held a second day of walk-outs.

Sharon Keith, Northern's regional director, said the company was prepared to guarantee jobs and pay for conductors for the next eight years if an agreement could be reached on "better customer service".

Members of the RMT union on Southern, South Western Railway and Greater Anglia will down tools on Wednesday and Thursday, the Press Association reported, in the latest action in an on-going row over the role of train guards and driver-only trains.

The RMT has raised fears over the safety of passengers if guards are withdrawn from service by the train operators in a bid to save money.

The letter said: "I remain concerned that in the event of a train evacuation, derailment or incapacitated driver, the absence of a guard to assist could leave passengers at risk".

'We are pleased with a resolution, which we believe, works for the staff and the company, and we now look forward to working with Southern Rial to restore good industrial relations and deliver the service passengers in the region deserve'.

Many services will not be affected, but others will be cancelled, replaced by buses or busier than normal. "Avoiding cancellations is key to us delivering a resilient and reliable service across the busiest and most congested part of the United Kingdom rail network".

The dispute has spread to South Western Railway because the RMT is seeking assurances about working practices when a new fleet of suburban trains are introduced in 2019.

"It's also not about safety, as the independent rail regulator has ruled that driver-controlled trains which have been used in this country for thirty years, are safe".
