Students at St. Mark Catholic School had a special type of show and tell Thursday in honor of Veterans Day

Some years, as many as 100 local veterans attend the event.

West Aurora High School has an Air Force Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps program that has about 170 cadets, who took part in putting the Veterans Day assembly together.

Students at Carroll High School in Ozark paid respect to veterans as well as city officials and their teachers on Thursday.

At the end of the Veterans Day assembly, Alex Zijlstra and Zane Wolf of Boy Scouts Troop #143 led the Dismissal of Colors as the veterans saluted the flag.

"I want to urge young people to get involved in service for their community as well as their country", he said.

Staley High School has held the event every year since their opening in 2008.

From World War 2 to Vietnam, Korea to Kuwait and more, military men and women who served their country were honored.

Cub Scout from Pack 25 says, "It makes me feel good to let them know that we still care about them because they did fight for our freedom".

"I had to learn how to walk again", he said. "We like them to bring in pictures, artifacts, things they can share with the kids to give the kids a sense of what it's like to serve in our military".

In a statement, Principal Robert Bruce called the school's annual Salute to Veterans event "a great opportunity for our students to gain a better understanding of the sacrifices made by the fearless men and women who have served our country".
