Duterte to North Korea's Kim: Don't end life on this planet

Mr Turnbull and Mr Trump are in Manila for the ASEAN Summit, and fronted media together with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday.

Some of the ASEAN members said in response that North Korea presents a serious threat to the region, the spokesman said without going into further detail.

At the meeting, Duterte, who chairs this year's ASEAN meetings, assured Abe of his support in Tokyo's campaign against North Korea.

"We need to use every means, including the complete implementation of the (U.N.) Security Council resolutions, to raise pressure on North Korea to the maximum possible extent and make it change its policies", Abe said at the outset of the talks. "It is bad, it puts a strain on everybody, not only in Japan but all over the world", said Duterte. "The Philippines is about too far but, you know, nobody will save us from a holocaust if it happens", he added.

"The possibility can not be ruled out that a military attack would kill Japanese abductees, given that President Trump has threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea", the official said.

Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo insisted Tuesday North Korea was still developing nuclear and missile defense technology amid threats of war and that multilateral talks were useless at the moment.

While its shows of power have been met with heavy economic sanctions from the United Nations, it remains defiant and has on several occasions threatened to fire missiles over the USA territory of Guam. "Sharing common traits and values deeply embedded in our traditions should help us develop a culture of tolerance and understanding among us, providing a space for positive dialogue", Duterte said in his speech at the Asean Plus Three (APT) 20th Commemorative Summit held in Manila. He also proposed that Japan and China cooperate in doing business in third countries.

"Twenty years ago, we played a vital role in responding to the financial crisis in Southeast Asia".

Abe, in a meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping at an Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Vietnam on Saturday, hailed a "fresh start" to the relationship between Asia's two biggest economies and military powers, including cooperation on North Korea. Mr Abe said, "Golf clubs are where we can both relax and share our real feelings, and we took our time having a frank talk about all sorts of hard topics".
