Sessions Gets Heated in Exchange With Oregon Senator

The revelation came in a response from the Justice Department to an inquiry from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Robert Goodlatte, R-Va., who in July and again in September called for Sessions to appoint a second special counsel to investigate concerns he had related to the 2016 election and its aftermath.

Sessions also said on Tuesday he did not challenge a statement by another campaign foreign policy adviser, Carter Page, that he told Sessions in a brief encounter that he was about to leave for Moscow. Sessions will likely face questions regarding his knowledge of conversations between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, such as those described in the statement by George Papdopoulos, which wasn't released to the public until after Sessions' Senate hearing.

Mr. Trump is frustrated with the continuing investigations into Russia's election meddling and possible ties to his campaign.

The New York Times reported that the letter "appeared to be a direct response to Mr. Trump's statement on November 3, when he said he was disappointed with his beleaguered attorney general, Jeff Sessions, and that longstanding unproven allegations about the Clintons and the Obama administration should be investigated". But it was a form of chaos every day from day one.

But Sessions insisted he did not make any false statements in his previous congressional testimony or public statements.

"My answers have not changed", Sessions said.

Under pressure, Sessions recused himself from the Russian Federation investigation, a decision that later helped pave the way for the appointment of former FBI director Robert Mueller as special counsel to lead the investigation.

Sessions testified that he now remembers the meeting Papadopoulos, but his memory about conversations is limited. "I have always tried to answer the questions fairly and accurately".

He struck a similar note before the Senate Judiciary Committee last month, when he denied knowledge of communications between Russians and Trump campaign officials.

Papadopolous pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his contacts with Russians.

"But I will not accept and reject accusations that I have ever lied under oath". Trump has repeatedly voiced frustration about the Mueller probe and publicly criticized Sessions, stoking speculation he might be fired.

Is a special prosecutor needed to investigate Clinton's dealings? "It sure looks like the FBI was paying the author of that document and it sure looks like a major political party was working with the federal government" to damage Trump, Jordan said.

When asked if he had contact with Russia in October, Sessions told the Senate Judiciary Committee he did not have any contact with Russian officials and didn't know of anyone else who did. [John] Danforth took over that investigation as special counsel - and Mr. Mueller.

Yet he recused himself in March from overseeing the Justice Department's investigation into potential coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin after acknowledging two previously undisclosed encounters with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak.
