Crews cleaning up Keystone Pipeline leak in Marshall County

TransCanada pipeline leaks 210000 gallons of oil near SD, ND border

Back in April 2016, crew responded to a spill from the Keystone pipeline in Freeman, South Dakota.

TransCanada shut down part of its Keystone pipeline after an oil leak of about 5,000 barrels Thursday in Marshall County, South Dakota. "Some landowners are concerned about how an oil spill might harm their property and water supplies".

The pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta, to Cushing, Oklahoma, and to Wood River and Patoka in IL, has been shut, while the southern leg of the system to the Gulf Coast remains operational, the company said.

TransCanada said at the time that the leak was the first detected on the pipeline since it began operating, though there had been leaks at pumping stations. The Keystone XL pipeline has been opposed by environmental and Native American groups since it was proposed past year.

"Just days before the Nebraska Public Service Commissions decides on whether to approve Keystone XL we get a painful reminder of why no one wants a pipeline over their water supply", said Greenpeace campaigner Mike Hudema. State regulators have already granted construction permits for the pipeline.

Meanwhile, TransCanada has pitched Keystone XL, its proposed 830,000 barrel per day tar sands, in similar terms, citing similar technology and safety procedures. In 2010, the first year it was in use, there were 35 Keystone leaks in the USA and Canada.

The shutdown did not affect the Marketlink pipeline system, which uses the facilities of the southern leg of the Keystone system from Cushing to the Gulf Coast.

This spill should be a stark warning for Nebraska's PSC as it considers TransCanada's proposed route for Keystone XL through some of the state's most sensitive farmlands and aquifers.
