If you were hoping to buy a HomePod for your honey this holiday season, you'll have to come up with plan b.

In a statement to CNBC this morning, Apple said its HomePod smart speaker will be released in 2018, not by the end of this year as originally announced. But the Cupertino, CA-based Apple says the device needs a little more tinkering.

The company is touting the HomePod as a high-fidelity speaker programmed to learn people's tastes so it can become a digital disc jockey that can automatically play tunes that its listeners will like.

But Apple is late to a marketplace dominated by Amazon and Google, with a handful of other players entering the race. For Apple, this may not be a big deal as their products tend to sell well no matter when they are released but it does make you wonder what the issue is with the device. Apple confirmed on Friday its expensive Siri-powered smart speaker has been delayed. The smart speaker was due to launch in the US, UK, and Australia in December 2017, having been announced back in June alongside the iMac Pro at WWDC.

Apple introduced the voice-controlled HomePod in June. The HomePod will also have to compete with recently released devices like the Alexa-enabled Sonos One speaker. As a smart home assistant, the HomePod works with Siri and Apple HomeKit, and like other smart speakers, will be able to control things like light bulbs and door locks with voice command.
