Young died today (18) with his family around him. He was 64 and had been suffering from dementia for the last three years.

Another Young sibling, the AC/DC producer and Easybeats guitarist George Young, died in October at age 70.

The passing of AC/DC co-founder Malcolm Young means an era is over. They added, "From the outset, he knew what he wanted to achieve and, along with his younger brother, took to the world stage giving their all at every show". He always stuck to his guns and did and said exactly what he wanted. "As a guitarist, songwriter and visionary he was a perfectionist and a unique man", Angus Young said in a statement Saturday.

Young left AC/DC in 2014 after the band said he had been struggling with an undisclosed ailment, later revealed to be dementia. He took great pride in all that he endeavored.

The commentary for the entry was written by legendary music producer and co-president of Columbia Records Rick Rubin, who wrote, "Nothing gets in the way of the push-and-pull between the guitarists Angus and Malcolm Young, bassist Cliff Williams and drummer Phil Rudd. His loyalty to the fans was unsurpassed".

The band, which was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003, announced his passing on its website with a plainspoken simplicity that reflected their music.

Malcolm's brother and bandmate Angus Young opened up in a heartfelt post on the official AC/DC Facebook account, sharing the impact his brother had both professionally and personally. "He leaves behind an enormous legacy that will live on forever". The band released their debut album, High Voltage, in 1975 which featured hits like "It's a long way to the top" and "High Voltage". Singer Brian Johnson joined the band in Scott's stead; when Back in Black was released, it went to No. 4 on the Billboard album chart, and eventually sold 22 million copies in the US alone. In 1979, their album "Highway to Hell" propelled them into the spotlight and from there, it was all uphill for the group. Angus quickly became one of rock's most unusual frontmen, and the contrast between his schoolboy clothes and the band's crushing riffs only made them seem heavier.
