It's 'red kettle' season again in metro Atlanta

Volunteers do not have to stand during the entire two hours.

Walmart Bell ringing shifts are generally scheduled between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m., but there may be some wiggle room.

Salvation Army and City of Florence representatives gathered Friday evening at the Army's new West Palmetto Thrift Store to cut the ribbon to officially open the 2017 Red Kettle Campaign.

It's time again for the Salvation Army Bells to ring.

"What we give through the kettle campaign stays local to help people not only at Christmas but throughout the year", said Maj.

Today in the United States, the Salvation Army is able to assist more than 4.5 million people during these holidays, thanks to contributions raised through the familiar Red Kettles.

Mayor Dan Pope said the red kettle fundraising effort is about so much more than tradition.

He said it's a way of experiencing the spirit of giving that is at the heart of Christmas and costs participants nothing but a couple of hours of their time.

The Salvation Army asks all gifts to be dropped off at Turtle Creek Mall or the Family Store on USA 49 by December 15, 2017.

The kettles are staffed Monday through Saturday right up to Christmas Eve.

Food programs to prevent hunger are an essential part of the services at the Salvation Army Cortland Center.
