Senate Republicans last month launched the investigation into the 2010 deal, demanding to know what Clinton and other Obama administration members on the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), which unanimously approved the sale, knew about Russian involvement, and whether national security was compromised.

Smith said Donald Trump's repeated accusations during the election campaign that Hillary Clinton smoothed a deal while she was secretary of state involving USA uranium mining, Russian Federation and the family's charitable Clinton Foundation was "inaccurate in a number of ways".

Fox News reports on Uranium One. OK'd that sale - of Russian "bribery, kickbacks, extortion and money-laundering" meant to "grow" Vladimir Putin's nuclear interests in America.

Clinton's reaction to the possibility of an investigation smacks of guilt. He divested from the company in 2007, well before Ms. Clinton was named secretary of state and even longer before the company's sale was proposed.

'Nine people involved in the deal made donations to the Clinton Foundation totaling more than $140million, ' Smith said. Republicans, including President Donald Trump, have for years claimed that Clinton approved the deal in a quid-pro-quo exchange for donations to the Clinton Foundation.

The conspiracy theory was first floated by Peter Schweizer, the senior editor-at-large of far right publication Breitbart, in his 2015 book Clinton Cash. He pointed out that the state department said Clinton did not intervene to approve the deal and, besides, did not have the power to approve or block the deal.

Canadian financier Frank Giustra, a top Clinton Foundation donor, sold his company, UrAsia, to Uranium One, which was chaired by Ian Telfer, also a Clinton Foundation donor.

The right says the Obama-era Uranium One deal and its ties to the Clintons are a smoking gun.

Fox News made much of the revived scandal on Monday and the prospects of Sessions summoning general counsel to investigate.
