USA indicts Iranian in 'Game of Thrones' HBO hack

HBO's 'Game of Thrones' hacker hit with charges in the US

Iranian Behzad Mesri charged in HBO hack, 'Game of Thrones' script theft

Mr Mesri, a member of the Iran-supported Turk Black Hat Security team, conducted "hundreds of website defacements" in the United States and across the world, prosecutors said.

Joon Kim, acting US attorney for the Southern District of New York, and William Sweeney, assistant director-in-charge of the FBI's New York Office, will discuss the case at Tuesday's press conference.

USA prosecutors say he stole scripts and plot summaries for then unaired episodes of the global smash hit "Game of Thrones" series, and unaired episodes for multiple other shows, including the "Curb Your Enthusiasm" comedy series.

(HBO), stealing data - including episodes of the popular television series "Game of Thrones" - and attempting to extort $6 million worth of the digital currency bitcoin from the company.

Mr. Mesri "had worked on behalf of the Iranian military to conduct computer network attacks that targeted military systems, nuclear software systems and Israeli infrastructure", the indictment said, but it did not suggest that the hacking was sanctioned by the state. The indictment alleges Mesri compromised several user accounts and over a period of months exfiltrated confidential information, including video files containing unaired episodes of HBO programs.

HBO spokesman Jeff Cusson declined to comment on the indictment.

On July 23, Mesri sent an email to HBO executives that read, "Hi to all Losers!"

Behzad Mesri, also known online as Skote Vahshat, is an Iran-based computer hacker, the U.S. District Court Southern District of NY stated in an indictment. He was not, however, working for the Iranian government when he allegedly hacked HBO.

Mesri has been charged by a grand jury with various counts of computer fraud, as well as wire fraud, interstate transmission of an extortionate communication, and aggravated identity theft, according to court paperwork.
