"It is time to further our collective action to end violence against women and girls for good", the Secretary-General said marking the Day, which on 25 November, highlights that around the world, more than 1 in 3 women in their lives have experienced physical violence, sexual violence, or both. As the world undergoes a seismic shift in response to widespread allegations of sexual harassment, teleSUR examines what the event means today. In 1999, the United Nations named November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The CS noted GBV, has remained one of the most pervasive violence of human rights in Kenya and a big hindrance to the country's socio-economic advancement.

This year's 16 Days theme, 'Leave No One Behind, ' reflects the importance of the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, which commits to eliminating all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres. In 2012, "almost half of all women who were victims of intentional homicide worldwide were killed by an intimate partner or family member, compared to 6 percent of male victims".

Countries have agreed in regional and global plans of action to implement strategies that will strengthen the capacity of health systems to respond to survivors of violence against women. As a result, resources for initiatives to prevent and end violence against women and girls are severely lacking.
