"And as a radio chemist, I advocate for so many children in S.T.E.M. and women in leadership positions and that's the mission of a Miss Universe".

A similar situation happened in 2014 when Jamaica's representative to the Miss Universe pageant, Kaci Fennell finished in 5th place.

Yesterday, Miss South Africa was crowned as the new Miss Universe for 2017.

After Manushi Chhillar's victory at the Miss World 2017, India had pinned high hopes on Shraddha, 21, a media graduate, to end India's 16-year drought as Lara Dutta had last brought back the crown in 2000.

"You feel so empowered because you are on a stage with 91 other women that are strong, that are independent, that have worked really hard", she said.

South Africa's Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters won the crown while Colombia's Laura González Ospina was first runner-up.

Nel-Peters teaches self-defense courses for women inspired by her own experience. The pageant victor started the program after she was robbed at gunpoint shortly after she was crowned as Miss South Africa.

A Good Samaritan saw her fleeing the scene and drove her to safety, and she escaped unharmed.

Miss USA Kára McCullough, Miss Canada Lauren Howe, Miss Spain Sofia del Prado and Miss Brazil Monalysa Alcântara also made the Top 10 list. "She is a woman that nothing is ever too much to ask for, and I think that is exactly who I am".

Ntsiki Mazwai, who is also a social activist, made the declaration via Twitter following Nel-Peters' first place finish in the global beauty pageant. Join us in a conversation about world events, the newsgathering process or whatever aspect of the news universe you find interesting or important.
