The newly engaged duo smiled and shook hands with many who braved the cold to attend what's described as a "walkabout" in Nottingham, which is located roughly 128 miles north of London.

Prince Harry and his new bride-to-be-Meghan Markle travelled to Nottingham on Friday (Dec 1), for their first royal visit together since announcing their engagement.

Harry's communications secretary Jason Knauf said the prince is "looking forward to introducing Ms Markle to a community that has become very special to him".

In the central English city of Nottingham, Harry and Markle, both wearing long navy overcoats, greeted hundreds of smiling well-wishers waving British and USA flags, chatting and shaking hands with onlookers who braved freezing weather to welcome them.

The soon-to-be husband and wife will go on to watch a "hip hopera" at Nottingham Academy, where they will continue to meet with students.

Markle, who has been a campaigner for several causes including work as a U.N women's advocate, is to give up her previous charity roles as she begins life in Britain's royal family, Harry's spokesman said on Tuesday.

It was announced earlier this week that the royal couple are set to tie the knot at St George's Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle in May next year. Shortly after appearing in front of the press for an official photo call, Meghan's engagement outfit had completely sold out, with fans desperate to get their hands on her Line the Label white coat, bottle green dress by P.A.R.O.S.H and shoes by Aquazzura - the coat and dress have since been re-named, both called "The Meghan" in her honour.
