TIME reveals shortlist for 2017 Person of the Year

President Trump hinted that he had been tipped for this year's title last month when he tweeted: "Time Magazine called to say that I was PROBABLY going to be named "Man (Person) of the Year".

The protests have continued to draw the ire of Trump, who views them as unpatriotic and disrespectful to the military, although the president never served.

Patty Jenkins, 46, is the first woman to direct a film that earned more than $100 million in its opening weekend - in this case, 2017's Wonder Woman. Dozens of male leaders in Hollywood, media, business, and politics, have since been accused, with notable figures losing their jobs over their alleged treatment of women in the workplace.

President Trump was named Person of the Year last year, calling it "a tremendous honor".

The #MeToo movement represents the people, mostly women, who have fueled a worldwide discussion about sexual harassment and assault.

Understandable since the award isn't for merit or achievement, but for "the person or group of people who most influenced the news during the past year, for better or for worse".

Kaepernick was the first NFL player to take a knee during the national anthem past year, describing it as a means of protesting police brutality and racial inequality in the United States.

Federal Bureau of Investigation director Robert Mueller, Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Saudi Arabian leader Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos round out the remainder of the list.

Xi Jinping: The Chinese President received a second five-year term this year. He was also written into the Communist Party's constitution, which bestowed him with new authority and reinforced him as the country's most powerful leader in modern history.

The 2017 Person of the Year will be announced on the TODAY Show Wednesday morning.
