John Conyers' attorney, Arnold Reed, would not confirm or deny that the congressman was planning to retire in a phone conversation with The Associated Press early Tuesday.

When asked if Congress should disclose the details of settlements made by other lawmakers in cases of sexual misconduct or harassment, Conyers replied with "a strong, unequivocal yes".

But after being publicly accused by one woman after another in recent weeks, he faced growing calls to resign from colleagues in the House, including Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Ian Conyers, a grandson of John Conyers' brother, told The New York Times for a story Tuesday that the 88-year-old Democrat's doctor "advised him that the rigor of another campaign would be too much for him, just in terms of his health".

The Detroit Free Press on Monday reported that Elisa Grubbs, who previously worked for Conyers, said she saw the congressman touched another one of his accusers, Marion Brown, inappropriately and said Conyers also groped her on one occasion in church.

The decision sets up a battle within the Conyers family for his Detroit-area House seat.

He said he's endorsing his son, John Conyers III, to replace him in Congress. Conyers faced calls to resign following reports that he reached a $27,000 settlement with a former aide who said she was sacked for rejecting his sexual advances.

The allegations spurred a House Ethics Committee investigation into Conyers' conduct. "This too shall pass", said Conyers on a local MI radio station Tuesday morning. Four other women have signed affidavits saying Conyers sexually harassed them when they worked for him as well.

Supreme Court Lets Stand Texas Ruling That Could Undermine Marriage Equality
Supreme Court declined Monday to overturn a Texas ruling that raised questions about the rights of couples in same-sex marriages. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 against an Arkansas law forbidding same-sex couples from being listed on a child's birth certificate.

Conyers told Mildred Gaddis he's confident in his legacy, despite multiple sexual harassment claims against him, and that his legacy will continue through his children.

Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., said Conyers' exit from Congress was a result of pressure and nothing more.

Grubbs witnessed assault on other women.

Conyers said in a statement read Tuesday on the floor of the House by Texas Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee that he was resigning "to preserve my legacy and good name". More and more women began to speak out against Conyers.

After a 15-year struggle, Conyers succeeded in winning passage of legislation declaring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a national holiday.

In 2000, he was presented a Lifetime Achievement Award during the Detroit NAACP's annual dinner and in 2005 Conyers was among 11 people inducted to the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame. The committee's website lists Conyers still as a member.

The furor over Conyers unfolded as the sexual misconduct allegations against Franken and Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore sent members of both parties rushing to choose sides. "They are not true and I think they are something that I can't explain where they came from". "We support the right to protect the constitutional rights of all involved".
