New Mexico State Police said via Twitter that the two people killed were students at Aztec High School but provided no additional information on them.

As the noise got louder and closer, school officials issued a warning over the loud speaker.

Deputies with the sheriff's office and surrounding police departments responded to the school after reports of a shooting.

Aztec is a rural community of 6,500 people in the heart of northwestern New Mexico's oil and gas country and near the Navajo Nation.

The New Mexico State Police were taking over the investigation. He did not say whether anyone had been injured or killed. Other schools in the area also were placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

The sheriff's office urged people to avoid the area and confirmed the school was evacauted.
