Frigid temps cause drop in United Blood Services donations

Pledging loyalty and thanks to Canada, Syrian refugees donate their blood

On Dec. 16, 2017 Canadian Blood Services put out a call for more blood donors over the holiday season, saying 35,000 open appointments needed to be filled across Canada before January 6, 2018.

Travel, family activities and changes in routines pose challenges to blood collections, especially during the last half of December and into the New Year, the release said.

Platelets are also collected but this poses a hard challenge because such donations only have a shelf life of seven days, notes the Canadian Blood Services.

"It can be tough during the holiday season to take an hour to give blood", said Rick Prinzen, chief supply chain officer for the CBS.

Frigid temps are keeping people indoors and officials with United Blood Services says they are in need of donors.

The Red Deer clinic is open 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, 9 a.m.to 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
