With mercury at 5.7 degrees Celsius, dropping a notch below the season's average on Sunday night, hundreds of passengers braved the morning chill as they remained stranded for hours at the airport and Delhi railway stations.

Almost 40 domestic and 26 global flights were among those delayed.

While the fog dissipated later and visibility improved, there were delays throughout the day because of cascading effect on flight operations. "This is so far the worst fog we have experienced this year". On Sunday, 54 domestic and 11 global flights were delayed due to bad weather. The poor visibility also affected the train and flight services with over 56 trains delayed, 20 rescheduled and 15 cancelled. All flights to and from the national capital are on standby and no operations are active as of now due to low visibility, news agency ANI reported.

Delhi airport has advanced technology for low-visibility landings, called CAT IIIB.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) at various places in Delhi fell to the "hazardous" category.

The Ministry of Railways on November 29 announced a detailed plan for cancellation and frequency reduction of trains traversing through fog affected areas in order to manage the train operations. Those travelling from trains have also faced the issues of rescheduling of their trains due to fog in several parts of northern India.
