LG Display claims OLEDs are self-illuminating and therefore not as severely hampered by aperture ratio, making them optimal for 8K panels, unlike transmissive LCDs which require more powerful backlight units that increase energy consumption, material costs, and the bulk of the final products.
As Engadget notes, the OLED display is likely to have super-rich blacks and great contrast levels, and colors should retain their intensity at viewing angles that would otherwise be problematic for LED-backlit televisions.
