There will be more than just fireworks lighting up the night sky this New Year's.

While a blue moon - the second of two full moons occurring in the same month - happens roughly every 2½ years, the phenomenon of two blue moons in a calendar year appears only a handful of times a century. On January 31, a Blue Moon will rise in the sky. As well as being a supermoon it will feature a total lunar eclipse which only happens around twice a year.

When the full moon is on the closer side it appears about 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than full moons that occur near the far side in the moon's orbit.

2018 will also bring another blue moon in March.

A supermoon is a Moon that is full when it is also at or near its closest point in its orbit around Earth. Monday, our lunar companion reaches an extreme perigee distance of 221,559 miles.

So the moon won't be as bright, but it will "take on an eerie, fainter-than-normal glow", NASA says, and could take on a "reddish hue".

Winston, Bucs stun Saints in season finale
It would be Kamara again who punched in a 7-yard run to put the Saints up 14-7 with 2:36 remaining in the first quarter. The Saints went up, 14-7, on a 7-yard touchdown run by Kamara to close a 65-yard drive in six plays.

Jim Schwartz Emerges as a Favorite for Giants Coaching Job
Their unit is ranked second, behind the Minnesota Vikings, in the conference, both in totals yards and points allowed. The Giants will likely go with a known commodity when it comes to picking their next head coach rather than gamble.

World oil prices on the rise
Oil's trading at the highest level since mid-2015 after WTI breached above $60 a barrel for the first time in more than two years. In the most recent week, USA production dipped modestly to 9.75 million bpd from 9.79 mln bpd the previous week.

Best time to watch will be around 9 p.m. Monday, when the moon's altitude will be around 41 degrees, heading east-southeast at 105 degrees.

And if you miss Monday's supermoon, the wait won't be long as another will take place on January 31.

Beach shack operators had complained about a lack of warning earlier this month, after a combination of cyclone Ockhi and Supermoon wrecked havoc on the beaches, with the rising water damaging several beach shacks and eroding beach stretches, popular with tourists. The moon won't come that close to Earth again until November 24, 2034.

There are no full moons during February this year.

A typical Supermoon is about 16% brighter and 7% larger than an average full moon.

The good news... you will not have to wait long at all.
