Demonstrations erupted in Iran over a week ago after the government announced plans to raise fuel prices and cut monthly cash handouts to lower-income Iranians.

"The government's instruction to the Revolutionary Guards to hit hard against the protesters, and the judiciary's threats of harsh punishment, are unacceptable", said a statement by four special rapporteurs, human rights experts who volunteer their time, released by the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights.

"The United States continues to pursue a policy of open and implicit interference in the internal affairs of other states - doing it unabashedly, openly, under the slogan of caring for democracy and human rights, directly infringing on the sovereignty of other states", Sergei Ryabkov said Friday in comments carried by the Interfax news agency.

Haley's comments come as the United Nations Security Council met to discuss Iran after the USA requested an emergency session amid protests in the country. President Trump has been particularly harsh, tweeting his support for Iranians who "are finally acting against the brutal and corrupt Iranian regime".

Iran on Wednesday angrily accused the U.S.at the United Nations of meddling in its domestic affairs.

Ambassadors for the 15 countries sitting on the Security Council met privately before an emergency session called by the United States over what U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley called the "troubling and risky situation in Iran".

Russian Federation scoffed at the idea.

The United Nations Security Council began meeting Friday afternoon to address anti-government protests in Iran.

Russia's deputy foreign minister has called the United States proposal "harmful and destructive". The US delegation said on Thursday it had requested the Friday meeting.

US President Donald Trump and a number of other US officials, including Vice President Mike Pence, have sided with the protesters. "Unfortunately, many of our European partners, as well as the United Nations, have thus far failed to forcefully speak out on the growing crisis in Iran". Nothing will stop Americans from standing in solidarity with them.

While the U.S. and its European partners - including the United Kingdom, France and Germany - all fundamentally support the right of Iranian demonstrators to peacefully protest, they disagree in their analysis of where the situation on the ground is headed and over the strategic value of ramping up the rhetoric publicly, sources have told CNN.
