An engineer of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) was killed and eight people were reported missing after an avalanche in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district, police said on Saturday.

"Earlier, nine bodies were recovered".

Reports said that search and rescue operation had been launched on Friday evening but fog and darkness are hampering the process.

The death toll due to the avalanche had reached 11 persons, the DC said, while stating that the rescue operation was nearly over in the area.

He said instructions have been given to Deputy Commissioner Kupwara to release the relief immediately.

Minister for Tourism, Tassaduq Hussain Mufti today expressed grief over the death of 10 persons who were buried alive in snow avalanches that struck Sadhna Top in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district yesterday. "Without the local volunteers, it was quite impossible to recover the bodies in the record time keeping in view the tough terrain and bad weather", he said. The Chief Minister expressed sympathies with the bereaved families and prayed for solace to the departed souls.

The Minister also announced a compensation of Rs 12600 each to the injured persons.

An officer of the Indian Border Roads Organisation (BRO) was among those killed after his vehicle was swept away in the avalanche at Sadna Top, a unsafe ascent point along the Kupwara-Tangdhar highway. The Minister also directed to provide better medical facilities to all the injured persons.
