There are indications that Egypt might be secretly backing U.S. President Donald Trump's decision recognising Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The visit will include Egypt, Jordan, and Israel, but not Palestine.

"The Vice President is traveling to the Middle East to reaffirm our commitment to work with the United States' allies in the region to defeat radicalism that threatens future generations", said Alyssa Farah, Press Secretary for the Vice President, according to a statement on the website of the White House.

Pence will leave on January 19 for Egypt, where he will hold talks the next day with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

The global community does not recognise Israeli sovereignty over the full city.

He will also hold a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Pence was supposed to visit the region in December, including a visit to Bethlehem and meeting with President Mahmoud Abbas.

Yousra, a renowned movie star in Egypt and Arab world, has denied knowing anyone by the name of Ashraf al-Kholi or that she discussed with anyone the issue of Jerusalem, the statement said, adding that she was not in Egypt during the period specified in the report.

Egypt was among one of the first countries to criticise the decision by US President Donald Trump, which prompted widespread worldwide condemnation and deadly protests in the occupied Palestinian territories. The White House decision on Jerusalem also prompted leading Muslim and Christian clerics in Egypt to refuse to meet with the vice-president in Cairo.

Jerusalem's status has always been one of the main obstacles to a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.

Trump's decision broke with a central premise of 50 years of American-sponsored peace talks, defied decades of Arab demands that East Jerusalem be the capital of a Palestinian state, and stoked fears of a violent backlash across West Asia. Pence is expected to meet only with el-Sissi, a leading Trump ally, while in Egypt. Adding that there is no evidence that al-Kholi, was in fact a member of the Egyptian intelligence.

The approach has pushed back against an global consensus that Jerusalem's status should be decided in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians and comes as Trump has vowed to press forward with plans to help broker peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

"I was just calling to tell you what our public stance is, so if you go on TV or speak in an interview, I am telling you what is the stance of Egypt's national security apparatus and what it stands to benefit from in this matter of announcing Jerusalem to be the capital of Israel, OK?"
