Facebook testing local news section on its platform

After all, Facebook isn't exactly hiding the fact that in the news feed, family and friends and sharing come first.

Facebook's revamping of its news feed is meant to ensure more "meaningful interaction" on the social network, Zuckerberg said in his post.

Whether the "Today In" feature will help boost local media remains to be seen. Adam Mosseri, vice president of product management at Facebook, who is responsible for running the News Feed, acknowledged that "there will be anxiety" from partners and publishers who often complain about the constantly shifting goal posts of what will be shown across the network.

More than 8,000 of you have liked or followed reality blurred on Facebook over the years. The impact will vary from Page to Page, driven by factors including the type of content they produce and how people interact with it. Pages making posts that people generally don't react to or comment on could see the biggest decreases in distribution.

Eventually, Facebook wants to roll this out to more cities. There is some consternation among publishers that this strategy could lead to a significant reduction in traffic referred from Facebook over time. This issue has been a hot topic ever since the 2016 United States presidential elections and Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been on a personal mission to end "fake news" sharing over his platform since. It was all part of the company's effort to build up its video advertising business, commanding higher CPMs than typically run on text-based websites.

"I don't think they're shutting all publishers down, but it sounds like this will take many by surprise", says one publishing executive who works closely with Facebook and who spoke on condition of anonymity. These will include posts coming both from people as well as pages. Product managers are being asked to "facilitate the most meaningful interactions between people", rather than the previous mandate of helping people find the most meaningful content, he said.

Reading local headlines and finding a band playing a show later sounds like a downright heartening shift in focus from watching Facebook's vast tangle of digital citizens emote endlessly into their algorithmically curated voids. "And the public content you see more will be held to the same standard - it should encourage meaningful interactions between people", Zuckerberg said.

"By making these changes, I expect the time people spend on Facebook and some measures of engagement will go down".
