Army Chief Says Pakistan 'Felt Betrayed' By US Accusations, Aid Cuts

In the weeks since the Trump administration withheld almost $1 billion in security aid for Pakistan, Washington and Islamabad officials have been working to patch things up and avert a risky deterioration in their often troubled relations.

In a press briefing, Khan, who has an worldwide reputation as a ladies man and at home is seen more as a religious conservative, said he has been a staunch opponent of Pakistan's participation in the war on terror since it began in 2001 following the 9/11 attacks on the U.S.

U.S. Central Command General Joseph Votel telephoned General Qamar Javed Bajwa this week and offered the assurance, said army spokesman Major-General Asif Ghafoor, while releasing details of the conversation.

Ghafoor said the army chief told the USA general the entire Pakistani nation "felt betrayed over US recent statements despite decades of cooperation".

In his New Year tweet, Trump had accused Pakistan of lies and deceit.

Famed cricketer turned politician Imran Khan said Saturday that meeting U.S. President Donald Trump would be a "bitter pill" to swallow should he become Pakistan's prime minister in elections later this year, but added "I would meet him".

On Friday, the Pakistan Army disclosed that the USA has assured Pakistan that no unilateral action on its territory is being planned despite the suspension of military aid and a flurry of hostile statements.

The Pakistani statement on Friday did not directly refer to Trump's tweet.

United States Ambassador to India Kenneth Juster on Thursday underscored that Islamabad's "positive" contribution is imperative for the stability and security in Afghanistan. These included that "the problems in ties were temporary, there would be no unilateral action against Pakistan and that the USA did not want a disruption in ties rather it wanted cooperation from Islamabad on areas of its concern".

His comments come days after Gen. Bajwa said his forces felt betrayed by their USA counterparts, due to the actions of the White House.

And in 2011, a secret American raid in the military garrison city of Abbottabad killed Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, the architect of the September 11, 2001 attacks on American cities that prompted the US-led invasion to topple the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Pakistan initially feared that Trump would launch a strike in Pakistan - similar to the 2011 raid to capture Osama bin Laden outside Islamabad - and put its forces on alert the day the aid suspension was announced.
