Google Pulls Games For Kids Containing Adult Swine Malware

According to Google's data, these Android games have a combined download count between 3 million and 7 million.

Google does have a safety feature called Google Play Protect, which checks apps when you download them and periodically scans your device for harmful apps to remove them.

The researchers from security firm Check Point reported a new Android threat, dubbed AdultSwine, which disguises as Android games.

Check Point has a full list of apps which were affected by the malicious AdultSwine code, including Five Nights Survival Craft and a "Mcqueen Car Racing Game" made to look like a Pixar's Cars movie game, among many others. The researchers noted that the malicious app prefers not to show ads in browsers and social networking apps to avoid suspicion.

"However, Google does work diligently to ensure that blacklisted apps are removed from the store". In a similar way to the scareware tactic presented above, the malicious app initially displays a pop-up ad, which attempts to persuade the user to register for this service. "We've removed the apps from Play, disabled the developers' accounts, and will continue to show strong warnings to anyone that has installed them", a Google spokesperson was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Another course of action the malicious app pursues is scaring users into installing unnecessary and possibly harmful "security" apps.

News feed to get a makeover
It's Facebook's attempt to erase practically all news from the feed to give users a sense of community, not outrage and clickbait. Also, our content is more visible the more people share and comment on it, so if it's a story you care about it, please share it.

However, the tech giant acted immediately and kicked the apps out of Google Play Store. Or, to trick you into registering for premium services charged to your account.

Cybersecurity company Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. discovered the malware, which it named "AdultSwine", and informed Google about the infected games, some of which were targeted toward children.

Lookout confirmed Check Point's findings on AdultSwine malware and said their security software has protected Android users since April 2017.

It is quite surprising that these apps found their way to the Play Store.

Apple's App Store does contend with malware but, due in large part to tighter restrictions and a far smaller number of apps and users, the iOS App Store appears to be hit less frequently with malware outbreaks than its Android counterpart.
