China slams United States nuke review

The Chinese Defense Ministry today rejected the revision of the nuclear strategy announced by the United States, whose government considered that China is a possible adversary in Asia that can take advantage of its atomic weapons.

The Pentagon called for the United States to develop two new types of weapons in an update of its nuclear policy Friday.

Daryl Kimball, the head of the Arms Control Association advocacy group in Washington, said that the development of new weapons in the USA nuclear arsenal was "dangerous, Cold War thinking".

Trump ordered a year ago, the revision, led by the Pentagon of the United States nuclear arsenal and the policies that govern it.

The US nuclear doctrine, published on Friday, said that Russian Federation and China have added new types of nuclear capabilities to their arsenals, engaging in "increasingly aggressive behavior, including in outer space and cyberspace".

It said China and Russian Federation had "added new types of nuclear capabilities to their arsenals, increased the salience of nuclear forces in their strategies and plans, and engaged in increasingly aggressive behaviours, including in outer space and cyberspace". He said China hopes that the U.S. will discard its "cold-war mentality" and shoulder its own special and primary responsibility for nuclear disarmament.

China's nuclear arsenal is relatively small, estimated by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute at just 270 warheads compared with 6,800 for the US.

The argument for these weapons is that larger nuclear bombs are so catastrophic that they would never be used and do not work as an effective deterrent - but with less power and destruction, the low-yield option would potentially be more likely to be used, serving as an effective deterrent.

Iran's foreign minister claimed it brought the world "closer to annihilation".

"The U.S. nuclear arsenal remains the largest and most capable in the world, consisting of thousands of warheads loaded on intercontinental ballistic missiles and submarines-launched ballistic missiles, along with nuclear bombs and cruise missiles carried by long-range bombers", Tony Fleming of the Arms Control Association told Xinhua.

He said he would waive sanctions against Iran that were lifted as part of the global deal for the last time unless his conditions were met.

Low-yield nuclear weapons, while still devastating, have a strength of less than 20 kilotons.

"The United States would only consider the use of nuclear weapons in extreme circumstances to defend the vital interests of the United States, its allies and partners", according to the NPR.
