At the time, demonstrations were going on outside a theater at the College of Charleston for a speech by Bree Newsome, an activist who climbed a flagpole and temporarily removed a Confederate flag from in front of the South Carolina Statehouse in 2015.

They say that Muhiyidin d'Baha, better known as Moya or Moye, was riding a bike near the intersection of Bienville Court and North Roman Street around 1:30 a.m. when he was shot.

Beau Tidwell, a spokesperson for the New Orleans Police Department, didn't elaborate on the shooting. D'Baha's niece, Camille Weaver who took it upon herself to create a GoFundMe page on behalf of the family in an effort to offset the costs of the activist's untimely death.

Police could not immediately provide a possible motive or suspect in the shooting.

He was a fearless, kind man whose death is a big loss for Charleston and the Black Lives Matter movement, said DeRay Mckesson, a prominent figure in the movement.

Moye became something of a sensation when he was caught on camera, during a news broadcast, jumping over a barricade in Charleston, to grab a Confederate flag from a protester in 2016.

"We can confirm that an adult black male, identified as Mr. Muhiydin Moye, sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh in a shooting incident that occurred shortly before 1:30am on February 6", said NOPD spokesman Beau Tidwell. He was charged with disorderly conduct for his actions, but was hailed as a hero online.

"I can say that our family is beyond appreciative for the outpouring of love and support we've received today", she expressed.
