According to IDC's Francisco Jeronimo, the 3.9 million units shipped of Pixel and Pixel 2 smartphones in 2017 is just a fraction of the smartphone market, which sees total shipments of 1.5 billion units per year. The company needed a whole year to sell as many Pixels as iPhone units Apple sells in a week. Based on its most recent sales figures, Apple was selling nearly 850,000 iPhones each day in the first quarter of 2018.
"Presumably, the jump to 3.9 million is largely thanks to the Pixel 2 but discounts on the original Pixel earlier in the year (and following the 2's debut) could tip the numbers in the other direction", the report added.
As hinted above, Google could have more success in attracting consumers by expanding the availability of the Pixel line.

Why Can't Google Pixel Catch Up To The iPhone?
The Pixel phone series is a testament to that, the pinnacle of Google's ambitions to date. In addition, there are 499 Apple Stores spread out in 22 countries, while Google relies on occasional pop-ups and its online Google Store, with no constant physical retail presence. The original Pixel phones launched in October 2016, which gave them less than three months of availability, so the 3.9 million figure includes both generations of Pixel handsets. Jeronimo said Google doubled its Pixel sales in the previous year.
This is the second time Google has acquired a smartphone manufacturer. A big marketing push would definitely help, and so would distribution through major carriers.
