Apple Inc. Considering Making Big Changes To iOS Release Cycle

Apple confirms iPhone source code leak

We now know why an Apple employee decided to leak secret iPhone code

According to the report, Apple intends to introduce a number of new features in iOS 12, but won't be pressured into pushing those features out to the public if they lack the necessary polish and functionality to make them worthwhile. While TrueDepth and Animojis are now exclusive to the iPhone X, the report indicates that a new iPad model will include the necessary hardware to support the feature. Given the troubles Apple has had with its latest versions of iOS, focus on the fundamentals likely wouldn't hurt. On the other hand, sticking to what Troughton-Smith calls a "ruthlessly ambitious" upgrade cycle risks rushing out features before they're ready and undermining Apple's vaunted reputation for quality.

The report suggests that eventually, the iPad will allow users to switch between multiple windows in a single app, similar to features the Mac has already seen and that Windows 10 is implementing in the near future with a feature called Sets. Apple said the feature rolled out with iOS 10.2.1 in 2016 was created to prevent unexpected device shutdowns, but apologized for not being more transparent with customers.

Back to building quality Major iOS releases are highly predictable, arriving each September with a slew of new features in tow. Craig Federighi, Apple's senior VP of software engineering, informed engineers at the company last month of the new strategy.

As previously reported, Apple is also planning to allow developers to release apps that work across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Also, it will add the Animoji support in FaceTime (and also Animoji), a redesigned stocks app, Face ID support on iPad, a new way to import photos into an iPad, upgraded Do Not Disturb mode, and a new way to integrate Siri into the iPhone search.

According to Bloomberg's sources, Apple will now start working on next two years of updates and engineers are now given the discretion to put new features on the backburner if they feel the code is not polished enough for shipping.

So if you're an iOS user and you've been jonesing for those features, just be patient.

While this may mean a less flashy WWDC 2018, in the long run it's probably good news for Apple, developers, and users alike. This wouldn't be surprising given that Apple Watch and iMessage apps can also be downloaded from the iOS App Store. These include the ability to run several windows in one app and to run two screens from the same app side-by-side.
