"The April summit will be another start of a great journey to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, bring peace to the peninsula and develop inter-Korean ties", Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon, the South's chief delegate for Thursday's talks, said in comments carried by local news agency Yonhap.

The two Koreas on Thursday began ministerial-level talks to arrange the date and agenda of the first inter-Korean summit in around a decade due to be held next month.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will meet with South Korean President Moon Jae-in for talks in an April 27 summit, Seoul officials said on Thursday.

It comes after Kim's visit to China earlier this week, his first trip outside of North Korea since taking power seven years ago.

Chinese President Xi Jinping promised Beijing would uphold its friendship with North Korea after his meeting with Kim.

South Korean officials echoed similar sentiments. South Korean envoys are to visit North Korea for two days to discuss issues.

"This, as it is known to all, is what the Chinese side has insisted on and persistently worked for", Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang told a regular press briefing, calling for all parties involved in the area to support inter-Korean talks "to promote the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the political settlement of the Peninsula issue". This is something the White House says is a sign the maximum pressure campaign is working, and relations are moving in a good direction.

The two-day trip by Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi follows talks earlier this week between Kim Jong Un and Xi Jinping.

Senior officials from both sides exchanged views in an amicable atmosphere, reflecting the recent detente on the Korean Peninsula.

However, the North has yet to officially confirm its interest in a summit between the leaders.

Trump wrote on Twitter he had received a message from Xi late on Tuesday that his meeting with Kim "went very well" and that Kim looked forward to meeting the USA president.
