Van der Zwaan, who joined Skadden in 2007, when he was about 24, played a role at the firm in complex global litigation and government investigations that belied his junior status, a fact his lawyers attributed to his worldwide upbringing and his command of French, Russian and English as well as Dutch.

Al Jazeera's Shihab Rattansi, reporting from Washington DC on Tuesday, said Van der Zwaan's trial was not due to any collusion with the Russians.

Alex van der Zwaan will serve 30 days in prison and pay a fine of $20,000 as part of his sentence after he admitted to lying to federal agents who are investigating former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

He struck a plea deal in February. But this sentencing has nothing to do with Trump, the 2016 election, or Russian Federation. Mr Trump has not been accused of any wrongdoing. But his sentence does not shed much light on the central question of Mueller's inquiry: Russian interference in the 2016 election.

In court on Tuesday, Van der Zwaan was also fined $US20,000 and sentenced to two months of supervised release.

Manafort, who was indicted past year on a series of felony charges related to his work in Ukraine before joining Trump's campaign, has not been charged with any crimes connected to the presidential race.

Schwartz stressed that his client had made the effort to return to the U.S.to "correct the record" after he lied to the special counsel's office, though prosecutors took issue with the characterization, noting that van der Zwaan was under a grand jury subpoena at the time.

Van der Zwaan asked to receive no sentence because his wife is six months pregnant. But Mueller's team has not previously identified Manafort, who was intimately involved in the campaign's operation for five key months, as a specific target of that investigation.

The report prepared by Skadden was used to defend Ukraine's then pro-Russia President Viktor Yanukovych from global criticism over the jailing of Ms Tymoshenko, a bitter rival who he defeated to become president in 2010.

"That Gates and Person A were directly communicating in September and October 2016 was pertinent to the investigation", prosecutors said in van der Zwaan's pre-sentencing court document.

None of the charges Manafort now faces alleges coordination with the Kremlin, and Manafort's attorneys had used that point to argue that Mueller had exceeded his authority by bringing charges against him accusing him of various financial crimes and acting as an unregistered foreign agent on behalf of Ukrainian interests.

Special counsel Robert Mueller's team of prosecutors included that detail in a memo defending the scope of their investigation, which so far has resulted in criminal charges against 19 people and three Russian companies.
