London's murder rate overtook NY for the first time in history.

Amid a spate of knifings, London's monthly murder rate has surpassed New York City's for the first time since consistent records have been kept.
According to Eric Monkkonen, a researcher at the University of California, since 1800 London has had a murder rate per person of between half and a 20th of New York's (pdf). In other words, the correlation of number of guns to increases in murders hasn't happened in the US, if anything the argument can be made that an overall increase in gun ownership has led to a drop in violent crime.
Since 2014, the number of homicides in the British capital has risen by 38%, and throughout the countries of Wales and England the number of violent crimes has increased by 12% from 2011 through 2017.
Sky News has identified 45 murders in the capital since the start of the year.

Unlike the United States, most murders in the United Kingdom are committed with knives and other non-firearm weapons. While New York City also has strict gun laws, numerous murders there are shootings.
