A Henrico County resident injured when a charter bus headed to the Masters golf tournament overturned on a Georgia interstate Thursday said the wreck "was a traumatic experience".

Police said driver Steven F. Hoppenbrouwer, 61, of of Gwinnett County, Ga., was charged with driving under the influence and failure to maintain a lane.

Augusta University Medical Center told the network that they have received seven patients from the accident.

"Several" of the 18 passengers on board were sent to Doctors Hospital in Augusta with injuries not considered life-threatening, the department said. Five of them remain at the hospital; one is still in critical condition, another is in serious condition and three are in fair condition. He said passengers told authorities the bus had drifted off the edge of the roadway before it veered and crashed.

Some later reports claimed that there were only 18 passengers on the bus during the crash, although the number at this time is unclear; it is possible different reports included the driver himself and other did not, but this in unconfirmed.

A lot of individuals were shot to hospitals however, that the patrol says that the injuries were not lifethreatening.

A tour bus with 19 people heading to The Masters Golf Tournament flipped in Augusta.

The crash occurred shortly before 9 a.m. on eastbound I-20, about 15 miles west of Augusta.

The driver was hit with a DUI charge after flipping the bus Thursday morning.


Jet Executive Limosine owns the tour bus, GSP said.

A phone listing for Hoppenbrouwer was disconnected.

The crash originally led to the closure of lanes on both sides of the interstate.
