A men's squash pairing from Sierra Leone and a Rwandan para-powerlifting coach have become the latest African athletes to miss their event at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Patrick Ogwel, the team manager and assistant secretary at the National Council of Sports told Xinhua that two weightlifters did not return to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games village on Wednesday.

Last night, a further three athletes left their rooms, the statement said.

Commonwealth officials have informed the Australian police about the "desertion" and authorities have warned the athletes about overstaying.

Eight of Cameroon's 24 competing athletes have gone missing over the course of three days, leaving in three groups.

A formal complaint has been made to the Australian police but the Border Force are no longer monitoring the situation.

Two Ugandans and potentially one Ghanaian are also missing in action.

The Cameroonian athletes on the Gold Coast also have the right to apply for asylum.
